Carol I were sitting around one evening when we came across an advertisement for the Havasu Balloon Festival. Since neither of us had ever been to a balloon festival or to Lake Havasu, we thought this might be a good opportunity to visit someplace new and catch some great stock photographs of hot air balloons flying through the sky.
The festival, the 4th anuuual, takes place over a 3 day period on the grounds of the Island Golf Club at the Nautical Beachfront Resort which is just over the world famous London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. This year’s festival played host to 80 balloons, 10 of which were uniquely shaped. There were also skydivers, biplanes, belly dancers, dog shows, food vendors, carnival rides, live music and many retail venders for the shopaholics. The festival is very well attended with over 40,000 people coming from all over the world to watch the balloons. Many, like us, came in motorhomes.
We “dry camped” our motorhome at the Lake Havasu Marina (along with hundereds of others). This site was extremely close to the event grounds. Each of the 3 mornings around 7:30 AM all the balloons would take off at about the same time, from all around us, filling the sky with vivid colors and funky shapes. A second mass ascension took place at around 4:30 every day but was not as exciting as the winds prohibited some hot-air balloons from going up. In the evening around 7 PM there was a “night glow” (where all the hot air balloons, tethered to the ground & inflated would light up from the huge flames used to make the hot air). It was a spectacular site!
Besides having a great time we captured over 1100 photographs in about 20 minutes of video. Some of the photographs you see here in this post.
